Henri Matisse was a French artist who has greatly influenced my work in terms of style and method. He is most well-known for his cut-out work from my perspective which involved cutting out paper and card and then arranging them in interesting ways. I also do cut-out work but with more from a graphics stance I would say. It wasn’t actually until his final years that he started the cut-out work and this was because he slowly became reduced to working from his wheelchair which wasn’t the best when it came to painting. He would use big scissors to cut out these pieces of paper and have assistants arrange them on the floor or wall.

Here is a selection of Matisse’s work that I admire. I admire these pieces due to the use of vibrant bold colours and the care free placement of the cut-out shapes.
